Analysts predicted early end to UWB technology
According to experts In-Stat, ultrabroadband communication technology (UWB) as early as 2012, virtually disappear from the consumer electronics, and by 2013, – and from a PC.
«By 2013, the only UWB-solutions, are still present in the market, will be specialized solutions for industrial and medical segments» – argues Brian O’Rourke (Brian O’Rourke), Senior Analyst, In-Stat.
Previously, the same analyst predicted that the start-up companies in the area of UWB will face difficulties, and was right. An economic crisis cruelly passed by a young germ: WiQuest company closed in October, Staccato Communications and Artimi had to combine resources in November, PulseLink went to major cuts and continued to work in «hibernation». In February this year, ceased to exist Tzero, and behind it – Radiospire. Even dedicated branch Alliance WiMedia Alliance is planning to discontinue its work this year.
In fact, for novice players on the market continued to struggle UWB Alereon, Staccato and Wisair. They hope that technology will find a connection ultrabroadband its niche in the laptop, and peripheral devices, a new generation debuted in 2010.
Some of the reasons for optimism: the organization of USB Implementers Forum in June, promised to publish new versions of specifications Wireless USB, based on UWB. Another industry body, Bluetooth SIG, is considering the use of UWB as a transport layer capable of increasing the bandwidth interfaces Bluetooth. But in the long term, applied to wireless networks is an advantage for 802.11n.
According to the In-Stat, in the current year, the number of systems that support the wireless transmission of high-definition video for 802.11n, is approximately 100 million units, but by 2013 their number closer to 800 million. For comparison: the number of systems that support competing technologies WHDI (wireless home digital interface) to develop and Amimon WirelessHD SiBeam to develop a total of about one million units this year, and around 13 million in 2013.
