AMD head Dirk Meyer said that the company is developing a platform that will have less power consumption and size, better functionality and a more affordable price than the Intel Atom. ‘Killer’ of Intel Atom samples must be received by AMD partners in the coming year.

Meyer mentioned that the products on the new platform will be notebooks rather than netbooks. Since netbooks continue to thicken, and the corresponding segment blurred, skewed towards notebooks, the head of AMD was confident that even the term of «netbook» with time will get out of use.

In the normal segment of notebooks the AMD position is provided by Puma platform, which will soon be replaced by Tigris. Yukon and the Congo platforms will focus on the segment of ultrathin models. In addition, the company is developing yet another mobile platform, which takes an intermediate position between the Yukon and the Congo.

According to Meyer, the ARM based platform will not be able to penetrate the market of notebooks due to lack of software support.

While TSMC expects to learn in time 28-nanometer manufacturing process, AMD has already decided on who will produce its GPU, when it’s time to move to a new generation of technological processes. Manufacture graphics processors AMD will GlobalFoundries, the source, referring to the words of a trusted person in the AMD.

Technical details about future GPU AMD are not yet available. It is only the original release plans for product line under the brand ATI with support for DirectX 11 – in total, to the end of the year, AMD will release four models.

Despite the difficulties faced by TSMC in the issuance of chips on 40-nanometer technology, models of Radeon HD 4800, HD 4700 and HD 4400 will be produced at facilities of TSMC, and in compliance with the rules of 40 nm. However, in the first half of next year, AMD expects to move to the GPU issue GlobalFoundries, when there will be established manufacturing standards for the 28 nm, while AMD will be ready for a new processor architecture with a «native» support DirectX 11. Thus, from the rules of 40 nm AMD expects to immediately move to 28 nm, bypassing the 32 nm.

AMD announced the start of the supply of dual-core Athlon Neo, designed for thin and light notebooks. Thus, AMD will enter into this segment in a direct confrontation with Intel. Neo is a new development uninuclear model, released in January. Doubling the number of cores increases the performance of laptops, making them more attractive to consumers.

Lightweight laptops, for which the processor Neo, occupy an intermediate position between netbukami and expensive «ultrathin» models such as the Apple MacBook Air. AMD’s position is that netbuki though are inexpensive, offer limited functionality, and the «Ultra» laptops are too expensive, not less than $ 1500. According to AMD, dual-processor model for Neo will cost $ 750 – $ 999. Clock frequency of the processor is 1.6 GHz, power consumption does not exceed 18 Watts. The price of the processor has not yet been named.

Dual-core processors will become part of the platform Neo AMD Congo. Its membership also includes an integrated Radeon 3200 graphics processor. This graphics subsystem is the trump card AMD, because in terms of specific processor performance per unit of consumed power leader Intel, which uses more advanced 45-nanometer production methods (Neo issued by standards 65 nm). Why give preference consumers remains to be seen.

In response to the adoption of Intel that AMD had violated an agreement on cross-licensing, concluded in 2001, the company AMD has released a statement. It describes actions AMD Intel, as an attempt to divert attention from the international community in the ongoing antitrust investigation against Intel.

The site response, AMD is still lacking, but the source provides details of it, so it is likely to published data can be trusted.

In particular, AMD argues that if the case comes to trial, the company will be able to prove that Intel fabricated the charge to create an obstacle to commercial relations AMD, and thus is violating an agreement on cross-licensing.

Recall, Intel claims that AMD had violated the agreement on mutual exchange of licenses signed by the parties in 2001, as the newly established joint venture Global Foundries can not be considered as a subsidiary company and therefore does not receive the right to license specified in the agreement of 2001. As you know, the Intel have not recently been the subject of antitrust investigations in different regions.

According to Intel, AMD had violated the agreement on mutual exchange of licenses signed by the parties in 2001. Intel Corporation announced that AMD has already notified about it.

According to Intel, Global Foundries can not be considered as a subsidiary company and therefore does not receive the license rights specified in the agreement of 2001 on the mutual licensing. Intel also claims that the structure of the deal between AMD and ATIC violating the confidential part of the agreement. The company turned to AMD with a request to make the relevant part of the agreement publicly, but AMD still refuses to do so. Violation may lead to AMD will lose the license and rights granted to it by Intel as part of the agreement.

Under the agreement, the notice addressed to AMD, means that the parties attempt to resolve the dispute through negotiations. Interestingly, in response to the notice AMD said that Intel itself has violated the agreement by notice to AMD about the abuse. In Intel believe that such a preposterous position to the settlement of disputes, provided the original agreement.

Has there been a violation in fact and a way to elect a party to the achievement of mutual understanding? Time will tell.

Although AMD, according to recent reports, deferred the release of the first 32-nanometer processors on an earlier date, the output will not be synchronized with the debut of the new architecture. 32-nanometer processors, which will not be released in 2011, but in 2010, would not the first «bulldozers» (the code name of the new generation architecture – Bulldozer), but the current generation of products to be carried over to more advanced manufacturing process.

The first samples of Bulldozer processors with support for a set of commands SSE5 must also appear at the end of the next year, and serial production will be launched no earlier than 2011.

In 2007, when the first details of Bulldozer were announced, AMD had hoped to release the first model of the new architecture in 2009 with the observance of 45 nm. Later the plan was modified because it was decided to use a more advanced 32-nanometer production methods of new processors. First Bulldozer, which is code-named Orochi, is the successor of Deneb. He will have more than four cores, an integrated DDR3 memory controller and more than 8 MB of third level cache memory.
